On 4th November 2011 Nugent Care was honoured with admission to the Freedom Roll of Associations and Institutions and grant Freedom of the City of Liverpool.
The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Frank Prendergast presented the honour at a ceremony held in St George’s Hall, Liverpool.
The Lord Mayor said: “Since its foundation in Victorian Liverpool, Nugent Care has been at the forefront of providing care for children, disables people and the disadvantaged. They have been real pioneers in providing care and support services and are worthy of receiving the Freedom of the City.”
Kathleen Pitt, Chief Executive of Nugent Care, said: “It is a magnificent accolade to be presented with the Freedom of the City. Father James Nugent himself received the honour and we are extremely proud to be recognised for our commitment to continuing his work, maintaining his values and traditions with services relevant to today’s society.”
The event was marked with a speech by The Archbishop of Liverpool, the Most Reverend Patrick Kelly, who chairs Nugent Care’s board of trustees and there was a performances by Notre Dame Catholic College for the Arts choir which was dedicated to the work of Father James Nugent and Nugent Care. Children from Sacred Heart’s Primary School Council also took part in the ceremony dressed as sheep and helped the Archbishop exercise his new freedom to herd sheep through the streets of Liverpool.

Many people who have worked for Nugent Care over the years and are now retired still meet on a regular basis and take part in activities such as reading groups, museum visits and the occasional lunch thrown in for good measure, below is the programme of events for 2012.

Who are we and what do we do I hear you say?!
Primarily, our work is about offering choices, equality and opportunities to adults with learning disabilities. We achieve this through the hard work and commitment of our brilliant volunteers who enable many people with learning disabilities to socialise, learn, volunteer themselves, engage with their communities, gain employment and explore their spiritual side. We currently support around 380 volunteers who give us an incredible 35,000 hours of their time each year.
We work with many of our own residential care homes and schools, as well as our charity shop, in placing volunteers with them to support the work that they do. Our work takes us all over the North West and we often work evenings and weekends to fit in with the requirements of our volunteers and the people that they support.
Fundraising is another focus for the team – whether it’s bonus ball, collecting foreign money or visiting a school for Good Shepherd to talk about Nugent Care’s work. We support the personal development of Deaf people, attending our weekly arts & craft group here at Head Office. The group is currently in talks to create a mural for Nugent Care, so watch this space!
Our Faith & Light and our Reflection groups give people with learning disabilities the opportunity for spiritual growth and personal development. We also work with disabled children and their families to prepare them for First Holy Communion and Confirmation. We are currently busy organising our annual social night for all volunteers and service users taking place in April, a celebratory event for Volunteers’ Week in June, in conjunction with our 800 Group partners, and our annual mass in July - plus everything else that 2012 brings our way!

Chief Executive
Former England and Liverpool football legend, successful businessman and sports pundit Phil Thompson is so inspired by the work of Nugent Care that he has agreed to become our patron.
When Phil took up this role he was aware of and interested in our work having seen the fundraising activities that had been undertaken by the students of St Edward’s College in Liverpool, where his boys are pupils. The college was also established by Father James Nugent, founder of Nugent Care.
Phil said: "I was surprised at the diverse nature of the work of Nugent Care which helps so many vulnerable people and am delighted to be their patron.”
Can I take this opportunity to welcome you to Nugent Care’s website and I hope you will find it interesting and informative.
The origins of Nugent Care date back to Victorian Liverpool and the pioneering work of Father James Nugent (1822-1905) in relation to child welfare, poverty relief and social reform.
Today Nugent Care is one of the leading charities in the North West of England, caring for children, disabled and disadvantaged people of all ages.
We continue to fulfil a major social welfare role throughout the North West by acting as both a service provider and a major employer. The scale of our work is immense and currently ranges from care homes to special schools, adoption services to volunteer work and community groups.
The breadth of our work is such that our work is of real significance to North West people and their quality of life.
Most Rev Patrick Kelly (KCHS, STL, PhL)
Archbishop of Liverpool
Chairman
The origins of Nugent Care date back to Victorian Liverpool and the pioneering work of Father James Nugent (1822-1905) in relation to child welfare, relief from poverty and social reform. Through his ministry, Father Nugent witnessed first-hand the suffering caused by poverty and appalling conditions and took action to remedy the situation.
By the time of his death, Father Nugent had given homes and valuable skills to thousands of children, and laid the foundations for the work currently undertaken by Nugent Care.
Allied to the Archdiocese of Liverpool, Nugent Care has provided care and support for those in need for over one hundred and thirty years. While our values have remained constant, our services have adapted to meet the changing needs of today’s society.

Nugent Care 130th Anniversary Annual Report
Nugent Care, in progressing the inspiration of Father Nugent, a Catholic Priest and Founding Pioneer, will continue its history and culture of being at the forefront of, responding to, and representing people’s needs.
We will provide quality services that ensure people’s rights, independence, inter-dependence, choice and inclusion are integrated into everything that we do.

Nugent Care is a charitable organisation which offers a diverse range of support to adults and children across Liverpool and throughout the North West of England. The origins of Nugent Care date back to the 1800’s and the pioneering work of Father James Nugent (1822-1905) in relation to child welfare, relief from poverty and social reform. The work of Father Nugent had a dramatic impact on the lives of thousands of vulnerable people and his work continues to this day through Nugent Care.
Today the wide range of services Nugent Care has to offer allows us to provide a highly individualised and tailored approach to all our service users. We work with children, adults and community groups through our homes, schools and community based projects throughout the North West, ensuring people’s rights, independence, interdependence, choice and inclusion are integrated into everything we do. As a social care provider, Nugent Care works at the heart of some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged communities. We strive not only to provide the best possible service to individuals and their families in these areas, but to generate interest, awareness and an understanding of the issues they face and the impact of this on our wider communities.
As a community support organisation we are proud to have achieved our 130th celebratory year and look forward to the next 130 years of carrying on Father Nugent’s good work of supporting and caring for children, adults and the community in the Merseyside area!
